Why Home Birth In Queensland?
I knew that I wouldn’t be tempted to ask for or say yes to pain relief which was important to me as I wanted to have natural, undisturbed psychological births.
I knew that I wouldn’t be tempted to ask for or say yes to pain relief which was important to me as I wanted to have natural, undisturbed psychological births. Homebirth protected me from potentially having dangerous birth outcomes. I trusted my body more, felt safer and more supported. I felt empowered to say no and felt in control. My first was at home, in the water with my placenta birthed 14 minutes later My second was suspected shoulder dystocia, I felt so empowered knowing that I had spoken about what my midwives would do if this happened, I trusted my midwives, I was fully informed and was completely fearless knowing that whatever happened I had done everything in my power to ensure baby was safe. He was born at 4.68kgs! My 2 year old daughter was there to watch the whole thing, even the recuse breathes and she got to see me trusting my body completely I recommend having a home birth to who ever is open to it. Unfortunately the costs involved to have a homebirth in Queensland is pushing people to free birth, I am glad I spent that money to have professionals attend but if I couldn’t afford it I’d choose birthing at home any day, every day and although I don’t want more children right now I’d homebirth it again and again. Home birth is also important to me because I heard way to many negative outcomes in a hospital and didn’t want to go through any trauma as a result, I chose homebirth for the people that had their positive birth experiences stripped from them ✨
My own homebirth experiences eventually led me to become more involved in the homebirth community in Queensland.
From November 2022 to February 2025, I served as Convenor of Homebirth Queensland, supporting education, advocacy, resources and connection around homebirth in Queensland.
During that time I was also involved in advocacy around maternity care and the Rally for Safe Maternity Care Queensland.
